Bigger Isn't Always Better... But in This Case, We Believe It Is

Over the years we've heard a lot of feedback from you about what you'd like to change about YouTube, and the size of our video player is always top of mind. That's why today we're excited to announce a bigger YouTube player.

We're expanding the width of the page to 960 pixels to better reflect the quality of the videos you create and the screens that you use to watch them. This new, wider player is in a widescreen aspect ratio which we hope will provide you with a cleaner, more powerful viewing experience. And don't worry, your 4:3 aspect ratio videos will play just fine in this new player.

As always, we welcome your feedback and encourage you to share your thoughts with us on this exciting, new change happening for all videos on YouTube.

Have fun watching!

First of all, fantastic now I can make better use of anamorphic on my editing program.

However some of my old videos I deliberately letterboxed when I rendered them to give them a genuine widescreen feel, now that the player is included some of my old videos look terrible, is it possible you can have the widescreen option similar to that of the "High Quality" option, or make the option not apply to videos prior to the use of this feature

my widescreen videos were letterboxed to fit into the 4:3 player.

is there a way i can expand the video out so it can fill the whole 16:9 player?

This is a fantastic move by YouTube and I say well done, but there needs to be an option introduced for the video creator to automatically resize their videos to fit the new player. Many users including myself created videos which were 16:9 but were altered to proportionally fit the 4:3 YouTube window, which now results in black around all four sides of the video.

Great move, although I agree that both a 4:3 and 16:9 option would be better, considering the amount of material that is (and still will be) created 4:3 - for example anyone who blogs with a webcam?

But more importantly, this has made it even more apparent that YouTube needs to bring in a feature like Vimeo has, which is the ability to 'replace video' - uploading a new version of a video without losing comments, ratings, descriptions and star ratings. This would mean we could all upload new optimized 16:9 videos of our existing popular items.

Great move but when I uploaded a 16:9 video it still was swashed down to a 4:3 format, youtube can you please fix this problem.

i don't like this new player

Yes I agree with JarrodFactor (2 Below) that the ability to "Replace Video" would be great, as well as having the option of uploading 16:9 or 4:3 videos. I hope that the youtube team can do this.

If a video is in 4:3, it should be in a 4:3 player. If it's in 16:9, it should play in a 16:9 player. I would be happy with that.

Great idea - the more options we have the better. http://newbiesdiary.com

I like the widescreen option. Brings it line with the latest TVs and allows for a more cinematic look. Keep adding more advanced options.
